UT Dallas Summer Biology Research Workshop 2024

Our Summer Biology Research Workshop (SBRW) allows rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders a unique opportunity to explore the various aspects of biological sciences through a 4 -week hands – on experience in cutting-edge research projects in the laboratories of the Department of Biological Sciences within the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at UT Dallas.

Program Highlights:

  • Participants will engage in a 4-week hands-on research experience in a laboratory in the Department of Biological Sciences, UT Dallas.
  • Participate in team projects while collaborating with peers, graduate students and faculty.
  • Attend and participate in Departmental Seminars and Works in Progress presentations.
  • Research Presentation at the end of the program at the Summer Departmental Research Symposium.
  • 2 weeks Hands-On Training Component (July 8th -July 19th): Hands-on experience with the tools of the trade in a biology laboratory led by UTD teaching faculty and graduate students.
  • 2 weeks Research Component (July 22nd -August 2nd) – Discovery research project supervised by research faculty and mentored by graduate students.
Participant Eligibility
  • Texas Residents will be prioritized.
  • Must be above the age of 15 years at the time of registration (June 1, 2024). Rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders are welcome to apply.
  • Complete all requirements of the Office of the Program for Minors at UT Dallas.
  • 100% attendance during the 4 weeks of program participation.
  • Accepted participants will have to arrange for their HOUSING and TRANSPORTATION.
Research Participation
  • Participants will be matched to a research project based on their interest and availability.
  • Work as team members with their research group under the mentorship of their graduate mentor and faculty.
  • 20-25 hours of research involvement per week with the assigned research group and mentors.
  • Schedules will vary according to the specific research group and research project.
  • Participate in department research seminars and final research presentation at the end of the program.

  • Neuro-Immune interaction in Urinary Tract Infection using mouse models. (Dr. Dong Lab, Biology)
  • Computational analyses of proteins in motion. (Dr. Morcos Lab, Biology)
  • Generation of antibiotics from fermented food. (Dr. Palmer Lab, biology)
  • Understanding Staphylococcus infection using molecular and computational tools. (Dr. Dong Lab, Biology)
  • Environmental conditioning of E.coli (Dr. Boll Lab, Biology)
  • Molecular analyses of alcohol-induced Liver Damage. (Dr. Jia Lab, Biology)

Application and Enrollment Details:

  • MARCH 1-31: Submission of applications.
  • APRIL 30, 2024: Accepted participants will be notified and registration and payment links will be sent.
  • MAY 15, 2024: Registration Deadline
  • JULY 8TH, 2024: SRBW Begins
